Dog found dead, skinned
New Orleans, LA (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Nov 21, 2008
County: Orleans

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A dog that had been partially skinned was found dead in the yard of a home in the St. Roch neighborhood of New Orleans Friday afternoon, according to the SPCA.

Kathryn Destreza, the director of humane law enforcement for the SPCA, said the homeowner was horrified when she returned to her home only to find the animal lying dead in her yard.

Destreza said it is believed that the dog was skinned first and then walked to the home where it died.

"From the condition of the dog, we believe the skinning happened late Thursday or early Friday," said Destreza. "We don't know why this dog had so much of its skin removed. It may have been a case of the dog being used as bait and the perpetrator was attempting to expose more flesh to arouse other dogs, but we don't really know what happened."

The LA/SPCA is offering a $500 reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator(s) of this act of cruelty. The perpetrator(s) face a felony cruelty charge which could involve up to a $25,000 fine and up to a 10 year prison sentence. Individuals with information about this crime are asked to call 504-368-5191 ext. 100.
