Investigators said they found more than 30 animals, including dogs, cats and ferrets packed in the woman's home. Investigators told 11Alive's Blair Meeks that they were shocked by the filth and squalor inside the home.

"It was very trashy, a lot of animal feces around, all over the floor, and it was all trash, maggots, fleas, infestation everywhere," Maj. James Yarbrough of the Coweta County Sheriff's Department said.

Conditions were so bad for 10 animals that authorities put them to sleep. The surviving animals, including a blind dog, were taken to the Coweta County animal shelter, where they are being cleaned up, treated and fed.

Christy Stamps, 27, was charged with animal cruelty. She was later released on bond.

Maj. Yarbrough said it appears Stamps never intended to neglect the animals.

"The investigation shows she was trying to do good. She was trying. It just got overwhelming for her and she couldn't take care of them," Maj. Yarbrough said.

Family members also said Stamps just got overwhelmed.

"It might have been dirty, but there were no animals neglected there," Christy Stamps' father Dudley said.

Coweta County is southwest of Atlanta.
