A dog described as "near death" was rescued by Cameron County sheriff's deputies outside Los Fresnos on Friday.
The rescue follows an cruelty to animals investigation that the dogs and others were living in miserable conditions on Tract 43 Road.
Investigators told Action 4 News that the animals drank contaminated-looking water and from food bowls filled with ants.
Cristobal Davila with Cameron County Animal Control said two dogs from the same owner died in the summer heat but the last one was saved.
"It's sad to see an animal like that in such a condition," Davila said.
Deputies said concerned neighbors reported the abuse to the sheriff's department.
Investigators believe it's the area where one of two dogs perished in the agonizing heat.
Neighbor and animal activist Liz Patterson claims she saw the abuse first hand.
"There were five other dogs that have been tied to the fence linked chain that just died of starvation," she said.
Deputies did not release the homeowner's name but said a cruelty to animals arrest is imminent.
The rescued dog is now in the custody of Cameron County Animal Control and is expected to survive.
Officials are asking area residents to provide proper shelter for their animals and to make sure they have clean food and water.
Anyone who spots a possible act of animal cruelty, is asked to contact their local police department. References« TX State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Cameron County, TX
