Animal control officers say they have discovered a cockfighting ring on a man's property in the area of the village of Dona Ana.
Doa Ana County Animal Control supervisor Curtis Childress said the alleged ring was discovered earlier today.
Childress said charges may be filed and officers continue to investigate.
He added that the ring was discovered when the owner of about 30 roosters called officers to report his neighbors dogs had gotten onto his property and killed some of the roosters.
Childress said officers found a cockfighting pit as well as blades and other evidence of cockfighting.
In 2007, New Mexico became the second to last state in the nation to outlaw the blood sport but stopped short of making it a felony on first offense.
A first offense for cockfighting is a petty misdemeanor. It becomes a full misdemeanor after the second a offense and a fourth-degree felony every subsequent offense.

He says it's believed cockfighting took place on the property as recently as two to three weeks ago.
