Four kittens beaten, stabbed and strangled
Newton, KS (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Jun 9, 2008
County: Harvey

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Branden Hayes

36-year-old Branden Hayes has been booked into jail on felony animal cruelty charges.

His ex-girlfriend, Lisa Stewart, said she asked Hayes a couple of weeks ago to take her four kittens from the house to the garage to get a little air. A few hours later she took their mother in to nurse. They were gone. She was sick with worry.

"They were only twelve days old. Their eyes weren't even open yet," said Stewart.

After searching the street for the kittens she said that Hayes finally admitted he had buried them in the backyard after hitting them with a hammer and stabbing and strangling them to death.

"I was devastated. I just bawled. I mean it's really sad. It still bothers me he would do such a thing," said Stewart.

Newton police arrested Hayes on Monday, June 9.

"It's a travesty when people pick on defenseless animals and it may be an indicator of some other problems with this individual," said Detective Bryan Hall.

Stewart hopes he gets the help he needs behind bars.

"Someone who would do something like that they're not in their right mind," she said.

Hayes is expected in court over the next week.
