The Humane Society of Utah is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of whoever threw a dog off an overpass in Murray -- breaking the animal's jaw and inflicting internal injuries.

Officials say a red pickup truck parked on an overpass along Interstate 15 and tossed a one-year-old Boxer named "Seven" into traffic. A driver stopped, picked up the injured dog and took him to a veterinarian.

The vet contacted the dog's owner, who now faces up to $1,500 in medical bills. The dog has a broken jaw and other injuries from the 24-foot fall.

The Humane Society is outraged that someone would throw a dog off a bridge. Executive Director Gene Baierschmidt called it "an act of stupid, senseless violence."

A $3,000 dollar reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the dog-tosser.

Also, the Humane Society is encouraging the public to contribute to the "Seven Fund," which will help pay for the animal's medical expenses.

"Considering the circumstances under which this animal was hurt, we would like to offer the community a chance to be a part of seeing that Seven's medical needs are fully met," Baierschmidt said. "Seven is a beloved companion animal... we would like to see whoever did this brought to justice."

If caught, the perpetrator could face charges of Class B misdemeanor cruelty, punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of $1,000, and could also be held liable for the costs of the dog's medical treatment.

Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to contact the Humane Society of Utah's Cruelty Investigation Department at (801) 261-2919, ext. 210.

Anyone wishing to donate should send his or her contribution to The Humane Society of Utah, P.O. Box 573659, Salt Lake City, UT 84157-3659, and clearly mark the gift as being for the "Seven Fund."

Case Updates

The reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who thew a dog off a freeway overpass has been increased to $8,000.

The Animal Advocacy Alliance of Utah has added an additional $5,000 to the reward pot, more than doubling the $3,000 already committed by the Humane Society of Utah.

Wednesday afternoon, motorists along I-15 saw someone either drop or toss Seven, a 1-year-old boxer, about 15 feet off the overpass at 3900 South. Traffic came to a halt as a couple of motorists got out of their cars to corral the frightened and injured dog who began running down the highway.

The only description given to the Utah Highway Patrol was a red SUV, with either rails or a rack on the roof. A UHP spokesman said Saturday there had been no additional leads in the case.

Seven lost four teeth, suffered a broken jaw that required several pins to be inserted, a broken rib and blood in her lungs. Remarkable, she was able to go home from the vet clinic Friday.

Anyone with information can call police at 840-4000.
