Dog mutilated - ears, tail and genitals cut off
Las Vegas, NM (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Feb 6, 2008
County: San Miguel

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Recently Las Vegas animal control officers conducted a cursory examination of a dog's body, believed to be a German shepherd mix, at the scene where the dead dog lay next to a dumpster behind a Grand Avenue building. The animal had suffered numerous mutilations.

Someone had broken his jaw. They had sliced through his Achilles tendons. They had cut off his ears, tail and genitals. They had skinned the dog. They left his eyes intact. No one seems to know whose dog he was.

Animal Protection of New Mexico is offering a $7,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of anyone responsible for the dog's torture and killing.

"The intentional torture and killing of this beautiful animal is an assault on the entire community, " said Heather Ferguson, a member of the New Mexico Attorney General's Animal Cruelty Task Force. "It violates our sense of decency and demands a response."

Las Vegas police and ACT are investigating the details of the gruesome killing, and are working to connect the dog with a previous owner, as well as whomever is responsible for his death.

"The person or persons who intentionally mutilated this vulnerable dog are extremely dangerous," Ferguson said.

The German shepherd mix was disposed of behind a building at 423 Grand Ave., a building owned by a local animal advocate.

Those who may have information on this act of cruelty, or others, are asked to call ACT on its toll-free hotline: (888) 260-2178. If callers prefer to remain anonymous, they may do so.
