Several emaciated and deceased dogs were found inside a Phoenix home Sunday near 27th Avenue and Indian School Road, an Arizona Humane Society spokeswoman said.
Two dogs were dead and three others were malnourished, including a puppy as young as four months old, when emergency animal medical technicians were called to the scene about 2:30 p.m., said Denise Cavero-Hann spokeswoman said.
One dog had apparently died within the past 24 hours, while another was so badly decomposed that medical technicians were unable to determine its gender, Cavero-Hann said.
"Obviously there was some sort of neglect, otherwise the dogs wouldn't be in such bad shape," she said.
The emaciated dogs were transported to Second Chance Animal Hospital for medical care and monitoring through the night, Cavero-Hann said.
A landlord reportedly found the dogs when he went to check on the property, in the 4100 block of North 28th Drive. The tenant had been out of contact for a couple weeks, Cavero-Hann said.
The Arizona Humane Society is investigating the case. The findings and recommendations will be over to the Phoenix Police Department, which could launch its own investigation and potentially recommend charges if warranted.
Officials were unable to remove two apparently healthy dogs also found in the house because they were not in "immediate danger," she said.
Case UpdatesA search continues to find the man responsible for what the Arizona Humane Society is calling one of the worst cases of starvation they've ever seen.
An attempted neighbor alerted authorities to the situation when they noticed the dogs owner hadn't been home for several days.
Once inside, the group found two dead dogs, along with two puppies and an adult dog who were close to death.
All three animals were rushed back to the clinic in order to give them the chance to survive.
So far, fluid and medication are working for two of the surviving animals, but the third may not be as lucky.
So far, they've had no luck locating the owner of the animals, but if they do, they will charge the man with felony animal abuse.
As for the puppies, the group is hopeful they can mend them back to health and adopt them out to loving families. | Source: ABC 15 - Nov 12, 2007 Update posted on Nov 16, 2007 - 7:16AM |
