The Greene County Sheriffs Department is investigating a Hummingbird Lane resident's report that late Wednesday or early Thursday someone tortured, mutilated and killed a caged stray cat that had been taken from her property.

A report filed by Deputy Sheriff Howard Gale indicated that Linda Roberts, of Hummingbird Lane, told him about 8 a.m. Thursday that sometime overnight, someone had taken a metal cage containing a stray cat that she had planned to take to the animal shelter from her property and also had vandalized the patio area at her home.

When she found the missing cage in a ditch near her home on Thursday morning, the cat was dead and appeared to have been tortured and mutilated while inside the cage. The report indicated that the animals tail and front legs were missing.

In addition to killing the cat, according to the report, someone had overturned tables, chairs and plants on the patio of Roberts residence, destroying one small table.

The report listed the name of a possible suspect in the incident.
