Two dogs poisoned with antifreeze

Authorities in Strafford are investigating the deaths of two dogs they said ate hamburger laced with antifreeze.

NewsChannel 5 reported seeing signs warning pet owners that someone in the old city area in Strafford was poisoning dogs.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department said it has some leads but are investigating whether the poisonings were intentional.

Officials said someone may have been trying to poison a wild animal and that the dogs may have accidentally eaten the hamburger. Officials said it is illegal to poison wild animals as well.

James Bailey, 63, of Pennock Road in Strafford pleaded innocent to cruelty to animals for allegedly poisoning local dogs. He was arraigned Dec. 19 at Vermont District Court in Chelsea.

A 63-year-old Stafford man has been charged with cruelty to animals for allegedly poisoning two dogs. Vermont State Police say James Bailey intentionally poisoned two dogs near his home in October by feeding hamburger laced with antifreeze.

Police say Bailey was upset because the dogs had been running around on his property.

If convicted, Bailey could face up to a year in prison.
