Palm Springs authorities are asking for the public's assistance in locating the suspect or suspects responsible for slicing the ears off a puppy.

According to Palm Springs police Sgt. Mitch Spike, the puppy was found Sunday morning by a resident in the 4400 block of Camino Parocela. The woman contacted police after it wandered into her yard, showing obvious signs of mutilation, Spike said.

Animal Control officers confirmed that the dog's ears had been chopped off, he said.

Spike did not provide details on the puppy's approximate age, but said Animal Control officers were taking care of it.

"If a suspect is identified, he or she could be charged with felony animal cruelty and failure to provide proper medical care," Spike said.

Anyone with information on the crime was encouraged to contact the Palm Springs Police Department at (760) 323-8115 or Coachella Valley CrimeStoppers at (760) 341-STOP.
