Prosecutors should charge a Scottsdale woman with misdemeanor animal cruelty after one dog died and another was in distress from nearly two days without water, Scottsdale police said Monday.

Officers found a dead German Shepherd in a fenced kennel Thursday in the backyard of a home in the 10000 block of East Cactus Road.

Michelle Trapp and her three sons, ages 11, 13 and 17, live at the house, police said.

Police said one of the boys was responsible for watering the animals Wednesday night, but he forgot to do so.

Police also provided these details:

No one checked on the dogs before leaving the house Thursday morning.

The last time the dogs were checked and given water was Tuesday night.

Officers had responded Thursday to a call by a pool maintenance man who saw the dead dog and a second German Shepherd in distress.

The dead dog in the fenced kennel did not appear to be malnourished, but had succumbed to the heat and lack of water.

A yellow bucket stood "upright, dry and empty" in the dog's kennel.

The surviving dog was in a fenced pool area with no drinkable water, but with access to pool water.

The Arizona Humane Society is caring for the second dog, which is expected to survive.
