A little dog found near the trash bin at the Wisconsin Humane Society trash bin Thursday morning has died in what some employees are calling one of the worst cases of animal neglect they've ever seen.

A poodle mix pup caregivers are calling Stevie was infested with maggots and suffering from obvious injuries and malnutrition. Upon being found in a small crate next to the trash, she was immediately taken to the veterinary clinic where she was given antibiotics, shaved and treated for her open wounds.

The humane society said an animal care technician removed as many maggots as she could find from the little dog's body, but they continued to emerge from under her skin.

"Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident. In just the last three weeks, we've seen three cases of dogs who were left outside in dumpsters," spokeswoman Angela Speed said.

In a statement made earlier Thursday, the society said "Amazing transformations occur with every animal at the Wisconsin Humane Society and hopefully, Stevie will be no exception. She deserves to be healthy, loved and treated with the utmost respect and kindness."

Speed said the organization urges people to not leave animals in the trash, but rather bring them in and surrender them if they're unwanted.
