Montgomery County Animal Care & Control Officers in cooperation with the Miami Township Police Department are investigating a serious animal cruelty case involving a cat shot with an arrow. Officers with both departments were called to a mobile home park on Chris Lane in Miami Township on July 27, 2007. A male gray and black tabby cat was located with a hunting arrow though its leg. Officials hope to locate an owner for the cat which was not wearing a collar, tags or identification.
Animal Care & Control Officers transported the cat to the Animal Resource Center but were unable to save it do to the extent of the injuries. According to Director Mark Kumpf, "The cat had been suffering terribly for several days before our office was contacted. This type of intentional cruelty to animals can often lead to violence against people. We hope that someone will come forward with information that will lead us to an arrest and conviction in this case."
According to Major John DiPietro with the Miami Township Police Department, their department is actively investigating this case and is seeking the publics' help. If anyone has information, they are urged to call the TIPS line at 937-434-TIPS. The line is answered by machine and callers may remain completely anonymous.
Cat owners are encouraged to keep their pets safe at all times. Cats allowed outdoors should wear a collar with tags and identification. Microchips are strongly recommended as they cannot be lost or stolen. The Animal Resource Center, Humane Society of Greater Dayton, SICSA and local veterinary offices all offer microchip services to the public.
