Yvette Lorene Warsham, 50, of the East Newnan community was arrested Tuesday and charged with cruelty to an animal for neglecting at least one animal to the point where it had to be euthanized.

"The complaint went to the Department of Natural Resources from someone in the community asking them to investigate and remove a breeder's license," said Patricia Palmer, public information officer for Coweta County.

The state Department of Natural Resources called Coweta County Animal Control and learned that Warsham did not have a license to breed animals.

Lt. Steven Orr of animal control went to 95 East Wood St. in East Newnan to investigate the complaint on July 6, according to Palmer.

At the property, Orr found an older boxer dog in a near-death state. The dog was immediately taken to a local veterinarian for examination and treatment.

"This dog was in very bad shape extremely emaciated," said Coweta Correctional Institution Warden Bill McKenzie, who examined the animal's photographs and the veterinarian's report. McKenzie is in charge of the county's animal control department.

"She was not taken care of, but was left to die. This is definitely a cruelty case," said McKenzie of the dog's condition.

According to the veterinarian's report, "the animal was unable to stand, with fly larvae and maggots present."

The boxer was euthanized on Saturday, according to Palmer.

A warrant for Warsham's arrest was taken by Orr Monday in Coweta County Magistrate Court. The warrant stated that "[Warsham] caused the boxer breed dog to be malnourished resulting in death." It also stated that the complainant mentioned that other dogs were on the property in the same condition.

According to Palmer, Orr looked for other dogs on the property during the investigation but found none.

Warsham was arrested late Tuesday and the case has been handed over to the Coweta County State Court Solicitor's Office, which will handle prosecution.
