A man who was trying to protect his dog was shot late Thursday by a group of men.

Franklin County Sheriff Jim Karnes reported that at about 9:30 p.m. Jerry Galinger, 50, was shot in the abdomen and leg. Galinger was near the area of Florence Avenue at Annette Street.

In a report by the sheriff's department, Galinger was approached by a group of six to eight black men who had threatened to take Galinger's dog. Authorities said when Galinger refused, one of the accused males shot at him.

Galinger's nephew, 12-year-old Mike Fultz, said his uncle was shot three times -- once in the leg and twice in the chest.

Several of the shots went stray hitting two other residences on Harding Drive, police said.

"I came out and I heard some woman say, I can't believe you shot him. And I saw the guy go into the house with a shotgun, and that's all I heard," said Sandra Curnutte, a witness.

Galinger was reportedly in stable condition Friday morning; however, was downgraded to critical condition.

The dog was not injured.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police.
