A Pensacola puppy is recovering after being dragged down a busy road behind his owner's truck on Wednesday.
Sheriff's deputies in Escambia County, Florida say a passerby noticed the four-month old chihuahua being pulled by a leash tied to a vehicle on Fairfield Drive.
The witness, Jessica McDonald, told investigators she flagged down the driver and that's when he pulled the puppy inside the truck.
Still concerned for the animal's safety, McDonald then followed the truck to its destination where she says the driver, Pompeyo Morales, 51, refused to take the dog to the vet.
Morale's father tells News 5, his son simply forgot the puppy was tied to his truck and did not think the dog was badly injured, but officials at a local animal shelter disagree.
"The tops and bottoms of all four feet were scraped up, and he had a pretty good scrape and injury on his right thorax," said Candace Stordahl.
The Animal Shelter of Escambia County released the dog to another veterinarian clinic Thursday morning.
The puppy is expected to recovery, but shelter officials say they will probably not return the dog to Morales.
Morales is charged with one county of animal cruelty, and is out of jail on a $1,000 bond. Case UpdatesThe case against Pompeyo Morales has been reduced to a misdemeanor and remanded to county court.
