Spartanburg County environmental officers seized 15 animals and condemned a house occupied by an elderly couple Friday in Roebuck.

Sheriff's deputies placed the man and woman, both age 79, into emergency protective custody, said Don Arnold, director of the county's Office of Environmental Enforcement. Their house at 1501 Hobbysville Road was filled with trash, animal feces and urine, said Arnold, calling the situation an "unfortunate set of circumstances."

Eight dogs and seven cats were taken from the home and placed under the care of the Spartanburg Humane Society, Arnold said. Most of the animals were in poor health and emaciated, he said.
