A case of animal cruelty was reported when a cat was discovered with a wire and a nail sticking out of its head and bloody paws. The cat was taken to an area veterinarian and had to be euthanized.

Case Updates

Des Moines police and animal control officers have sent the body of the dead cat and a metal device to Iowa State University in Ames to see if experts there can figure out how the piece of metal became embedded in the cat's head.

Police Detective James Renoe said the cat could have been intentionally tortured, trapped by accident in some kind of snare intended for another kind of animal, or snagged by accident in a pile of material that somehow lodged in and around its face.

Sherrie and Nick Butters of Des Moines were horrified when their cat came home with what looked like a nail stuck in its head. There seemed to be wire wrapped around a part of the object.

"It's really hard to describe," Sherrie Butters said last week. They took Sunny to an emergency clinic. The cat later was put to death.

Des Moines police took a report and labeled it as a case of animal cruelty.

But was it? "We still don't know," said Detective Renoe.
