A four-month-old kitten was brought into the Wisconsin Humane Society offices on June 20 by a Milwaukee woman who rescued him from a group of abusing children.
The woman saw the kitten dangling from a string under the Wisconsin Avenue bridge, just east of the Humane Society building. Several children were abusing the kitten. They ran off, but the woman was able to rescue the cat.
Doctors at the Humane Society say the kitten was visibly distressed, but suffered no serious injury, probably because of the woman's quick action. The kitten, now called Pike because of his resemblance to a striped Northern Pike, is recovering. Society officials say he should be made available for adoption in a few days.
Animal abuse is against the law in Wisconsin. If the children who were tormenting Pike are found, they could be charged with misdemeanor abuse.
Humane Society officials say they pay close attention to animal abuse cases. They say the evidence of a link between cruelty to animals and violence toward humans is compelling. In fact, people who abuse animals are five times more likely to commit violent crimes.
Ironically, at the exact time that Pike was being tormented, Humane Society staff were conducting classes in the PAL program. PAL teaches at-risk youth about demonstrating respect and kindness toward animals.
You can learn more about PAL, as well as information about Pike on the Wisconsin Humane Society's website. References
