A Clifton womans cat is rehabilitating at its home after being shot with an arrow Monday night.

Neda Lynn Kennedy, who lives in the 3200 block of E 1/2 Road, said she found 3-year-old Ebony hiding under a tree after it had been pierced with an arrow that protruded from both sides of its body.

Well, I just grabbed her up and took her in to the vet, Kennedy said. I was so angry that somebody would do that. I cant understand why people want to be so mean to animals.

The dull-tipped target arrow entered the cat behind its right shoulder and came out near its other shoulder. Kennedy said she found the cat crying under a tree near her house at about 5 p.m. Kennedy said she doesnt know who shot the arrow but thinks it may have been someone who lives in a nearby apartment complex.

Deputies from the Mesa County Sheriffs Department took a report on the incident.

In 2003, the Colorado Legislature increased penalties for aggravated circumstances of mutilating, torturing or killing animals to a possible Class 6 felony charge. A second conviction for the same offense increases to a Class 5 felony charge.

Mesa County District Attorney Paul Hautzinger said he takes cases of animal cruelty seriously because people who lash out against animals can transfer their aggression to other people.

Theres a real correlation that people willing to do those things to animals are working their way up to do it to people, he said. You can quote me on this: If law enforcement gets me a suspect, I will be more than happy to prosecute.

Kennedy said her vet bill was $78.25, but the self-described animal lover said its not about the money. Kennedy raised the cat by bottle-feeding it after its mother refused to feed her litter.

Ebony is mostly an outdoor cat, she said.

Kennedy said she hopes police find a suspect because she wants the person to be held responsible.

I hope they do find them, she said. I want them to understand how it affects me.
