Zoey, a 6-year-old cat, lost one of his front legs after being shot at close range. The cat is recovering at home and still has several stitches in its side.

"I just can't believe someone would do that, " said Zoey's owner, Mary Ann Gaida. "That's cruel -- must be a monster out there."

According to police, the attack on Zoey is the third incident within the past month in Oakland County; Last week a cat from Milford had to have its leg amputated after being shot and a cat in Pontiac was killed by an arrow.

Patricia Porteous of the Animal Control Network said an investigation is under way to see if the attacks are related. Porteous also said the number of abuse cases is rising. "Kids, teenagers are abusing animals, torturing them. We've found broken legs on cats, kids blowing them up with fireworks," Porteous said.

"If this person did this to animals, who knows," added Porteous, "maybe people are next."
