A dog suffering from severe wounds and infection that required surgery was found wandering in Rochester on February 27.

A neighbor on Chestnut Hill Road saw the purebred Pomeranian and called police, thinking the animal had been hit by a car.

It turns out that the injury and damage to the dog's face and eye was the result of infections.

Police took the dog, now named Chance, to the Rochester Veterinary Clinic where it underwent surgery.

Veterinarian Thomas Moon compared the damage to the skin and tissue around the dog's eye to that on a human that would require amputation of an arm or leg.

Chance, who weighs 4 to 5 pounds, also had missing teeth and deep cuts on his body.

The dog did not have any identification and investigators believe he had been fed recently.

Police are now asking the public for tips as to who the owner might be. The person could face misdemeanor or even felony charges for abuse and neglect.

The Rochester Police Benevolent Association is now taking donations to help care for the dog.
