Two dogs found dead, tethered to pole
Kentwood, MI (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Apr 30, 2007
County: Kent

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Two dead pit bulls were found tied up to a pole outside of a home in Kentwood. Now, animal control officers want to know who left them there.

Investigators were called to the home in the 1400 block of 52nd Street Monday night. They found two pit bulls chained to a pole in the back of the house. The woman who lives there says they aren't hers.

Kent County spokesperson Amy Morris says investigators are still trying to find out who the dogs belong to. She says, "The resident of the property didn't have any knowledge that the animals were actually there. She indicated she had been out of town for four months and wasn't aware of the situation."

The woman had two dog houses in the back yard and investigators say the animals appeared to have food and water. Neighbors confirm that the homeowner had been away for a while, but they don't know about the dogs. Larry Dieleman says, "I know the neighbor had some dogs there. There was a pen there, but I haven't heard anything over there for quite a while."

Morris says, "What our animal control officers are doing is canvassing the neighborhood, knocking on doors, asking questions. Have you seen these dogs? Do you know who the owner might be?"

Investigators say the dog's necks were tangled-up in the chains, but there were no signs of any other injuries. Animal control officers say the deaths could have been an accident or the dogs could have been left there to die. If that's the case, someone could be charged with animal neglect. Before that happens, animal control officers need more information. If you know who the dogs belong to or know what happened to them, you can call the Kent County Animal Shelter at 616-336-3210.
