A Stewartville man admits he made a grave mistake after killing his neighbor's dog with a pellet gun because of its consistent barking. Now the family next door is distraught, wondering how this could've happened.

"I really feel bad about this," says Don Dereng

Dereng says he made a deadly mistake when he took matters into his own hands.

"I thought if I shot it with the pellet gun just to sting it that it would quit it and be the end of it. I wouldn't have to make an issue to the neighbor with it."

Dereng says he had brought up Peanut's barking to the neighbors before and says if he could do it again, he would have done things differently.

"I would have confronted them and made an issue of it rather than trying to take a short-cut and just resolve it on my own. I had no intentions of injuring that dog."

Dereng has apologized to his neighbors, but they continue to be very upset over the loss of their beloved pet, especially 10-year-old Kyle.

"Well it's kinda lonely because I'm use to sleeping with two dogs and I'm use to grabbing two of everything. One for Doggle and one for Peanut, but now I can't and I really miss her," said Klye.

Dereng says he confronted his neighbors about the dog's barking problem in the past.

He has not been charged, but could face a number of charges including animal cruelty.

Case Updates

We first told you last night about a Stewartville man who is facing charges for shooting his neighbors dog tonight those neighbors speak out.

Peanut, a chihuahua was shot while playing in her yard on Friday and died the next morning.

Neighbor Don Dereng admitted shooting the dog with a pellet gun after growing upset by the dog's barking.

Carol Skyhawk says, "The vet couldn't beleive it either, so I went over and asked him if he accidentally had shot our dog and he said he didn't accidentally do it. He intentionally shot him but he waited until the dog turned sideways so he wouldn't shoot him in the eye or anything."

Skyhawk says she no idea Peanut had been shot but took it to the vet the next morning after watching it suffer all night.
