A man who admitted feeding an oil-slicked puppy to a pet boa constrictor was jailed on April 26, 2007 and ordered to undergo drug and psychological testing before he's sentenced.

Joseph E. Beadle, 40, pleaded guilty last month to a charge of animal cruelty, a felony.

He was set for sentencing on April 24, but failed to appear and a Maricopa County Superior Court judge issued an arrest warrant for him. Beadle surrendered to authorities April 26 morning and was jailed with bond set at $5,000.

Police reports said Beadle fed the mixed-breed, 3-week-old puppy to the 8-foot-long snake in June as two 15-year-old boys watched. He poured cooking oil on the dog so it would be easier for the snake to swallow, according to the reports.

Investigators found the snake was also a victim of neglect. The snake is in the care of the Arizona Herpetological Society.

Beadle, of suburban Glendale, could receive up to a year in jail and a $150,000 fine at his sentencing, now set for May 29.

Case Updates

An Arizona man who coated a 3-week-old puppy in cooking oil and fed it to his pet boa constrictor has been sentenced to 90 days in jail.

Joseph Beadle, 40, must also serve two years of probation. He pleaded guilty to animal cruelty in March and spent 51 days in jail while his case was pending.

Police said the man poured cooking oil onto the mixed-breed puppy to make it easier for the snake to swallow. He then fed the snake as two 15-year-old boys watched.

Investigators later seized the boa after finding it had been neglected. The snake was euthanized for a neurological disorder.

"The county attorney's office has made prosecuting animal-cruelty cases a high priority," said County Attorney Andrew Thomas.

When the case first went to court, Humane Society officials applauded the charges and harsh comments made by the judge.

"There are a lot of cases that make big news, but this case really captured the attention of the community," said Kim Noetzel with the Arizona Humane Society.

Beadle claimed he couldn't afford to feed the snake.

"There's never an excuse to feed a live animal, like a puppy, to a snake," said Noetzel. "Now, that's not to say snakes don't eat small animals. They do. But, in nature, they don't eat puppies and there are so many other options."
