The Weld County Sheriffs Office is investigating what appears to be attacks on horses in a boarding stable near New Raymer.

Undersheriff Margie Martinez said the latest incident, involving a 24-year-old Mustang gelding boarded at TalSaNna Stables, apparently happened late April 11 or early April 12. The stables are near the Prairie School outside New Raymer, which is about 60 miles northeast of Greeley.

The horse suffered a gash said to be 5 inches deep and was noticed by a meter reader from Xcel Energy, Martinez said.

We have no leads to follow at this point, Martinez said, but said investigators are working with a veterinarian. She said a similar incident last fall resulted in one horse having to be put down because of injuries it suffered. Investigators are also looking to see if any similar incidents have happened in Wyoming or in adjoining Logan County.

Martinez said the Mustang is not very tame, so it would be difficult for anyone, especially a stranger, to get close enough to cut it with a knife or some other large instrument.

If caught, the person would face animal cruelty charges, trespassing and criminal mischief charges.
