Gil Gaynesbloom of Dennison will spend 10 days in Tuscarawas County jail for allowing one of his dogs to freeze to death in February.
According to reports, Officers were called to Gaynesblooms home on Fabruary 11, 2007, after a concerned citizen reported a dog was tied outside and not being taken care of. Assistant County Dog Warden Terry Warner found the emaciated hound frozen to death outside its dog house.
On March 29, 2007, Tuscarawas County Court Judge Brad Hillyer found Gaynesbloom guilty of one misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals.
Hillyer issued a 90-day jail term but suspended 80 days. Gaynesbloom must pay $578 in fines and court costs and serve a two-year period of probation. Gaynesbloom also must submit a letter of apology to be published in The Times-Reporter.
Hillyer allowed Gaynesbloom to keep his indoor dog, but said the dog warden will check frequently on the dogs well-being. Gaynesbloom is prohibited from having any outdoor animals. Case UpdatesDefendants letter to the editor posted to the Times-Reporter on April 5, 2007:
To the Editor:
My family dog, Roxie, died a horrible death that my family and I are very remorseful and full of guilt about and very sorry it accidentally happened. If I would have been a better pet owner, I would have checked on Roxie the night she got tangled up on her chain, couldnt make it back into her dog house and sadly froze to death. I swear to God, I would have untangled her. I regret I was not a more responsible pet owner.
I apologize to the community for distressing many people over Roxies terrible death. Those of you who know me know I would never hurt anything on purpose.
Please take care of your pets. Accidents can happen so quickly. Peace and love to all of you out there.
Gil Gaynesbloom,
Dennison
