The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department is investigating a late February dog-fighting incident where two pit bulls were found dead in Holland.

On Feb. 28, Ottawa County Animal Control was dispatched to 14461 James St., where they found two pit bulls dead in a church dumpster, according to a press release issued Saturday from the Harbor Humane Society.

Maureen Good, the society's medical direction, believes the pit bulls' condition at death was caused by fighting. She described the condition of one of the dogs as having a broken jaw, covered in bite marks and wounds, and emaciated. The other dog had a "belly full of blood," Good said.

Dog fighting is a felony offense in most of the country.
