Police have charged a Jacksonville man with animal cruelty after a 13-year-old boy led them to a grisly scene behind a Colbert Drive mobile home.

Beneath a pile of blood-soaked leaves, police and an animal control officer found the decomposing remains of a dog the boy said he watched being hacked with a large knife.

Police were at the residence March 19 after the boy's mother called them and said she was threatened by her boyfriend, who told her he would "cut your head off like I did that dog's head last week," according to a Sheriff's Office report.

Jason Kyan Knox, 29, of Louisiana Street was arrested at the mobile home after the woman said a box cutter was held to her neck while she and Knox were in her car.

While police were there, the woman's son said he followed her boyfriend when he took a dog into the woods last week.

The boy said he was told to turn around but went back when he heard the dog screaming then saw it being chopped with a large knife, according to police.

The boy told police he saw the dog's head being held down on a fallen tree branch while its neck was cut, the report said.

The report did not specify who might have owned the animal.

Knox, who ran out the back door of the residence when police arrived, was caught in the woods and charged with aggravated assault and animal cruelty that resulted in an animal's death.

Knox remained in jail Tuesday in lieu of $75,006 bail.

A Jacksonville man charged with animal cruelty after his girlfriend's teenage son saw him behead a dog has been placed on probation after pleading guilty.

Jason Kyan Knox, 29, was placed on three years' probation after admitting the animal cruelty and an aggravated assault against his girlfriend. She told police in March he held a box cutter to her neck and threatened to "cut your head off like I did that dog's."

Under Knox's plea agreement with prosecutors, Circuit Judge Charles Arnold ordered him to pay $250 to the Jacksonville Humane Society and receive an anger evaluation with follow-up treatment if recommended. He also was ordered to pay $390 court costs and have no violent contact with the female victim.
