A Des Moines man was charged with a firearms violation after shooting a dog March 11 afternoon in his neighborhood.

Police ticketed Ted Kennard, 30, with reckless use of a firearm. Kennard maintained that his 7-year-old daughter was in the yard in the 2800 block of Oxford Street when the dog lunged at her.

Officers later determined, however, that his daughter was back inside the house when he took two shots at the dog.

When officers asked him why he shot the dog Kennard said he believed the dog might bite him. The dog was bleeding from a back leg, police said.
