A Rock Creek Village couple was sentenced on March 6 to seven days in jail and 40 hours of community service after being convicted of throwing two kittens from a moving vehicle.

Jeremy Brock, 30, and Jacquelyn Brock, 23, of 6404 Route 166, were convicted in Chardon Municipal Court of two counts of animal abandonment, a second-degree misdemeanor, and two counts of animal cruelty, a first-degree misdemeanor.

"I am satisfied with the sentencing, as far as it is limited by state law," said Sharon Harvey, executive director of Geauga Humane Society's Rescue Village.

Sarah Westman, a humane agent for Rescue Village, said it was important that the sentence included community service.

"We not only want to punish people who resort to acts of cruelty against animals, but also to educate them about the reality of their act to try to keep it from happening again," she said.

Westman said she hoped working at Rescue Village with sick and abandoned kittens would keep them from doing it again.

The Brocks were driving west on Route 166 in Thompson Township near Rustic Pines Mobile Home Park July 17 with their children in the back seat when they threw two 8- to 9-week-old kittens from the front window of their vehicle, Westman said.

Both kittens died on impact or soon thereafter, according to the veterinary report.

"I was there for the autopsy. The damage was very traumatic to the kittens," Westman said.

During their trial, the Brocks claimed the cats were not thrown from the car. Instead, they fell from the wheel wells. The story did not convince Judge Mark J. Hassett.

"There were eyewitnesses that were driving in a car behind them," Westman said. "They testified they saw an arm come out of the window."
