On March 7, Steve Sprowl, cruelty investigator for New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, received a call that a dog was left in the bed of a pickup truck at the Exeter Stop & Shop parking lot.

The small dog was shivering and appeared to be extremely cold -- the temperature was 12 degrees. Further investigation uncovered that the owner of the truck was not the owner of the dog and that he had no knowledge of how the dog was left in his truck.

Exeter Animal Control Officer Neal Jones and Sprowl brought the dog to the N.H. SPCA in Stratham. At the SPCA it was discovered that Razzy, as the dog is known, had been adopted from the shelter the previous month. When contacted by Sprowl, the dog's owner confessed to having left her in the back of the truck after driving around looking for a place to discard her.

Exeter Police Department will investigate the case further and charges of abandonment are expected to be brought against the dog's owner. Abandoning an animal is considered animal cruelty under the state of New Hampshire's criminal code and carries a misdemeanor charge for the first offense.

Thomas Greaney, 75, of Beverly, Mass., was arrested on a charge of animal cruelty on March 19. Police allege he abandoned his 3-year-old female rat terrier cross, Razzy, in the Stop & Shop parking lot on March 7. Greaney and his wife adopted the dog from the SPCA in Stratham on Feb. 8.

Officer Neal Jones said the couple adopted the dog, which had some behavioral problems, in hopes they could give her a good home. But the dog was too much for the elderly couple to handle, Jones said.

Greaney returned to the area March 7 and tried to return Razzy to the SPCA, but it is closed on Wednesdays. Because his wife was so upset about having to give Razzy up, Greaney did not want to return home with her, Jones said. He then left the dog in the bed of a truck at the grocery store.

The SPCA helped police find Greaney, who later returned to the area to turn himself in. He is scheduled to be in Exeter District Court on April 4, facing a Class A misdemeanor, which carries a fine of up to $2,000 and up to a year in jail.
