A boxer dog had to be euthanized because it was suffering from extreme malnutrition when Gaffney Animal Control Officer Dwayne Fowler found it Jan 31.

Fowler has cited Antonio Rodrecus Gregory, 31, of 408 Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd., Gaffney, for ill treatment to an animal.

The officer received a call about the dog's condition and went to Gregory's home at 4:45 p.m. to find the dog on a chain, starving and dying, a report at the Gaffney Police Department states. Fowler said the dog's chain was tangled so badly the animal could not move and could not get to his shelter. There was also no water for the dog.

"The dog was very emaciated and shaking uncontrollably," Fowler said in the incident report. "Once I freed the animal, it could not stand."

When Gregory arrived at the residence, he told Fowler the dog's condition just got that way in the past two days. He also told the officer the dog's water was inside the house, but that the dog stays outside, according to the report.

Fowler seized the dog and took it to a local vet, who recommended the animal be euthanized due to the severity of its condition, the report states.
