Three 15-year-olds face animal cruelty charges after beating and kicking a hungry dog so severely that it had to be euthanized, Charleston County sheriff's deputies said. All three were charged with ill treatment to animals, a felony that carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
The three teens, whose names are being witheld because of their age, alledgely chased the medium-size dog after spotting it rummaging through a garbage can on Salters Hill Road Tuesday afternoon. One teen reportedly beat the dog with a rake while another clubbed it with a mop. A third boy kicked the dog, according to a police report.
The sheriffs's office was called after a neighbor witnessed the attack. Deputies arrived a short time later and arrested the teens, all students at Baptist Hill High School. The dog, a young, female shepherd mix, was in "severe, severe shock" when it arrived for treatment at the John Ancrum Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in North Charleston, said Dr. Robert Carlson, executive director of the organization.
The emaciated dog had a fractured rib and a thigh bone that had been broken in multiple places. Its left kidney had also been torn loose by the beating. The dog was pale and showed signs of internal bleeding, Carlson said.
"I've not seen injuries like this except on dogs that have been hit by cars," he said. "They beat the tar out of this dog."
The dog's injuries were so severe that the SPCA had no choice but to destroy the animal, Carlson said. Deputies have reportedly been unable to locate an owner of the dog.
Case UpdatesThe three Hollywood juveniles who kicked and beat a German shepherd to death with a rake and mop handle in March pleaded guilty Wednesday in Family Court.
The three male juveniles, each charged with one count of felony animal cruelty, pleaded guilty before Judge Jocelyn Cates.
Cates ordered each of the boys to strict house arrest and psychiatric and psychological evaluations, according to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The juveniles will receive their sentencing from Cates following their psychological and psychiatric evaluations, Karesh said.
