A little brown rabbit served as the bait to drive a 32-pound pit bull dog into a frenzy, according to the deputies who found the dog in the yard of a wanted man.

The dog had a 27-pound tow chain around its neck, which kept it just out of reach of a rabbit tied to a cage with a shoestring, a deputy said. The chain was wrapped around a tree, which had a white T-shirt with bite marks hanging from it.

Deputies said 20-year-old Lenard White Jr. dashed into the house at 9025 Gronde Ave. when he spotted the deputies and White wouldn't open the door. His sister, who lives in the house, showed up while deputies called for White to come. At first, she said the dog was hers.

As a deputy handcuffed her, White came out with his hands up and surrendered. He claimed the rabbit and the dog, but gave no explanation for putting the rabbit in harm's way, a deputy said. Besides the warrants for failure to appear in court, White is accused of animal cruelty and baiting an animal. No bond has been set for the warrants charges.
