A Carter County man is in jail, facing multiple charges of animal cruelty after officials found dead and starving animals in cages on his property. Healdton police say the man abandoned his house after his utilities were shut off, leaving his animals without food or water for days.
Police received a tip on Nov 9 from a concerned resident. When officers arrived at the house, they discovered multiple cages with dead and starving chickens, rabbits and pigeons inside.
Police say there was no food or water near the cages or in the house, however, on the front porch there were two garbage cans full of dog food and chicken feed. Two dogs were found alive and severely malnourished inside the house.
While officers searched the area, the owner of the house arrived and began threatening officers, telling them to get off his property. Officer Rick Calhoun said "At that time when I pepper-sprayed him, he turned around and elbowed me in the chest and two other officers from doc arrived and assisted us with taking the suspect into custody."
Paul Allen Alpha could face up to 23 counts of animal cruelty. Officials say he has been convicted for the same crime in Love County as well. Alpha is also charged with assault and battery of an officer and resisting arrest. He is currently being held in the Carter County jail. The dogs that were rescued from the house are for adoption at the Healdton pound. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
