Two New Castle men have been accused of staging a fight between their pit bulls.

Joshua K. Reuter, 20, and Jacob K. Coomer, 18, both of 328 S. 17th St., are each charged with animal fighting contest, a class D felony carrying a standard 18-month jail term.

Coomers trial, in Henry Superior Court 2, has been set for Sept. 20, while Reuter last week received an Oct. 18 trial date.

The dog fight leading to the charges allegedly took place northeast of Baker Park in early May.

Coomer pleaded guilty May 4 to a receiving-stolen-property charge in Henry Superior Court 1. He was given a two-year suspended sentence and placed on probation for two years.

A hearing is set Aug. 17 on a prosecution request to revoke the teenagers probation.

Case Updates

Jacob Coomer was convicted of felony dog-fighting charges on September 20, 2006. He was sentenced to 192 days in the Indiana Department of Corrections. On September 18, 2006, co-defendant Joshua Reuter was convicted of misdemeanor animal cruelty and sentenced to 106 days in the county jail. Probation was denied in both cases. Both defendants were assessed fines, but according to court records, neither is prohibited from owning animals in the future.
