Max the German Shepherd's face is one Humane Society Chatham/Savannah Director Lynn Gensamer says is well known to everyone at the shelter.

"Humane Society gave an award to Max in late winter for arousing a family during a fire in their home," said Gensamer.

But this reunion is an unwelcome one.

"He's very, very thin," said Gensamer.

A lot thinner and suffering from what police say is animal neglect. It left Max malnourished and suffering from skin problems.

"Now we have him back because not only was he not appreciated but he was abused," said Gensamer.

"When I saw him I thought I can't believe somebody would allow this to happen," said Savannah-Chatham Police Animal Control Commander Lt. Brenda Boulware. She says her officers helped with the eviction of the family from their home on Beauford Road earlier this month. While they were there they found out Max wasn't doing well. According to a police report Max was tied to a fence in the backyard of the home with no food or water.

Now Boulware wants the public to help police find the dog's owner. She says the owner, 37-year-old Elias Mavromichalis, is wanted for animal neglect.

And while police are looking for the suspect Max will be looking for a new family.

"As soon as Max really is well we'll be looking for a family who really is more appreciative of Max," said Gensamer. "Max hopefully will go to a wonderful home. An animal devoted with unconditional love deserves better than this."

Mavromichalis faces misdemeanor animal neglect charges. Anyone with information about him is urged to call CrimeStoppers anonymously at (912)234-2020.

If you would like to make a donation for Max's veterinary care or adopt him when he recovers you can call the Humane Society Chatham/Savannah at (912)354-9515 or you can stop by the shelter at 7215 Sallie Mood Drive.

Case Updates

A Savannah man wanted on animal cruelty charges is behind bars, thanks to your help. Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police arrested Elias Mavromichalis on Saturday afternoon, after receiving a tip from a local news viewer, said animal control officers.

Earlier this month, animal control officers said they found Mavromichalis' German Shepherd, Max, abandoned and starving. They said he was tied to a fence behind the house where the family used to live. Max is at least 30 to 40 lbs underweight and he's missing a lot of his fur. In February, the Humane Society of Chatham/Savannah honored Max for saving Mavromichalis and his family from a fire. The dog kept barking until everyone got out of the house safely.

Max is now staying with the Humane Society until he's healthy enough to be adopted by a new family.

If you would like to help Max, you can contact the Humane Society of Chatham/Savannah at (912) 354-9515. The shelter is located at 7215 Sallie Mood Drive, Savannah, GA 31406.
