Dozens of roosters confiscated during a cockfighting bust are now headed to Houston. Over the weekend, Nueces County Sheriff's Deputies found the birds at a home near Petronila, and now animal control officials hope to send the message about the cruelty of illegal cockfighting.
On July 25, Nueces Animal Control and Houston SPCA collected the victims of what officials said is the county's first illegal cockfighting bust in 15 years. Officials estimated between 70 to 100 birds were rescued from the home of 62-year-old Horacio Quiroga, who officials said used his barn to let hundreds of spectators watch as the birds fought to the death.
"These are the blood stains. It's dried up now but you can see it on the boards," said animal control officer Jason Garcia. But even though these birds survived the torture in ring, they have little hope of living a normal life.
A hearing will be held in the next ten days, where a judge will determine who has custody of the birds. If the Houston SPCA is granted custody, it'll try to find a home for the hens and chicks, but most likely, the roosters who have been trained to kill will be euthanized. That's why officials said there are no winners when it comes to the sport of cockfighting.
"This is not a spectator sport. This is not a sport to bring children to, bring families to. This is cruelty to animals," said SPCA representative Heidi Brasher. "Cockfighting is cruelty to animals, and we want to make sure people understand that and we can get that message out today."
