A Beaumont woman was sentenced to two years' deferred probation on an animal cruelty charge. Theresa Marie Allen pleaded no contest to the charge in April, defense lawyer David Barlow said. Allen was charged after a dog in her care was injured by a chain kept around the animal's neck, according to The Enterprise archives.
Allen said she kept the female dog, which belonged to her husband, chained in her yard after her husband left because her children wanted the dog. Allen rarely went outside to check on the animal. She was charged after she noticed the chain had cut into the dog's neck and called City of Beaumont's Animal Control to report it.
An animal control officer determined the dog had been suffering for weeks or possibly months and reported the injury to the Beaumont Police Department as animal cruelty.
