Terre Barraz, 37, of West 35th Street, shares her two room apartment with 100 cats. Her eviction from the apartment was approved by the New York City Housing Court, Judge Peter Wendt, on July 8. Barraz has until July 22 to leave.
Barraz is waiting for the delivery of a formal eviction order before she can be legally removed from her apartment.
She has lived in the apartment for 18 years and pays $92 a month rent.
Barraz lives on $214 a month in welfare, most of the money goes to the landlord, money for cat food sometimes comes from friends. The cats consume 30 cans of 9-Lives cat food every day plus two large bags of Kozy Kitten dry food.
Barraz said, "We go down together. If they kick me out, I'll get a van and move the cats out. But there's no place for us to go."
"What I really want to do is relocate and keep all my cats. I just keep thinking about that song in 'West Side Story' that says 'There's a place for us.' I still believe that somewhere out there there is a place for us - some old loft or something."
Some of her neighbors say they can't open their windows because of flies attracted by the cats and the stench of cat urine is noticeable to anybody who enters the building.
Barraz' cat collection began 12 years ago when she rescued seven kittens form a garbage pile during a rainstorm.
