Helen Buraczewska, 68, owned the 36 dogs and seven cats rescued from the rundown home located at 91-26 75th Street, Queens. Buraczewska was the care taker of Evelyn Kerwin, 74, the owner of the residence where the cats and dogs were rescued. Buraczewska has been charged with 43 counts of animal cruelty and having unvaccinated dogs and cats. The cats and dogs shared the dilapidated home with two ladies.

When police and animal rescue entered the house yesterday to rescue the 43 filthy dogs and cats, they wore hazardous waste protective gear and masks as they loaded the animals into the vans.

Lt Joe Fiorio of the 103rd Precinct supervised the raid at the house. Lt Fiorio said, "The house had no phone or working bathroom."

Evelyn Kerwin was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital in Jamaica for medical evaluation.

The animals received medical examinations. "All the animals are dirty, some of them have sores." Two of the dogs were considered to be in very bad shape. The fate of the animals will be up to a judge and they will remain in custody until a decision has been made.

The neighbors are glad to see the animals have been removed. Next door neighbor, Sherry Nanan, said the stench from the house forced her to keep her windows closed - but sometimes, what she saw outside was just as bad.

Arlene Siebel, 64, cousin of Evelyn Kerwin who owned the home said, "It's very bad. A lot of the dogs don't go out, they do their business in the house."
