Seven high school students face charges of hunting small game illegally, calling the sport "critter beating," authorities said.

The students began killing the small game in 2004, but most of the activity occurred last summer, said Robert Stroess, a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources warden.

"They were going out and shining for animals, and one or more of them would beat the animal to death with a golf club, a baseball bat, garden tools, a hockey stick and a metal pipe," Stroess said.

The charges include 155 warnings and 25 citations for hunting violations, and the students from Kiel High School will be charged as adults. Their first court appearance in Manitowoc County Circuit Court is scheduled on April 19.

If convicted, the individuals face fines, revocation of hunting, fishing and trapping licenses and confiscation of hunting equipment, Stroess said.
