Stanley and Jessica White, have been accused by Oneida City police of starving their Doberman pinscher mix, Zeus. A healthy dog of this breed should weigh between 70 and 80 pounds, the shelter said Zeus weighed 46 pounds when he came to them on Aug 8. Zeus now weighs 56 pounds.

Sgt Bill Nelson acted on a tip when he went to the White's home on 409 Randall Avenue. Nelson called the Wanderers' Rest to ask the shelter's opinion on the dog. When Shelly English the director of the shelter arrived, Zeus was in the backyard. What they found was a starving dog.

There was no food in the yard, and the only thing for the dog to drink was from a bucket that appeared to have rainwater in it. The water in the bucket was "green and slimy."

Feces found in the backyard had wood chips and bark in it, showing the dog was eating wood for nourishment.

Stanley White, 32, denies cruelty charges. White said he fed the dog twice a day, but the animal had worms vomited and got diarrhea every time he ate. The vomiting and diarrhea had lasted for a month and the dog lost a lot of weight.

The dog was suffering from dehydration and malnutrition when he was picked up. The shelter said if White was concerned about the dog, he should have taken the dog to a veterinarian.

White said neither he or his wife could afford to take the dog to a veterinarian. He recently took a $200 a week pay cut at his job Oneida Ltd and his wife couldn't find work.

The first 48 hours of Zeus being at Wanderers' Rest he gained 5 pounds.

Zeus is thriving under the care of the shelter and continues to recover. "He's a lot more excited about life now that he has the energy." He's eating a prescription diet consisting of six small meals a day. He takes multivitamins, antibiotics and enzymes to help his digestive system.

Jessica White called the shelter Thursday to offer to pay some of Zeus' vet bills.
