Gun, pit-bull found in trunk
Brentwood, NY (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Mar 2, 2006
County: Suffolk

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged:
» Scott Shelby
» LaPaul Phelps

Suffolk police have arrested two Brentwood men after they discovered a dog and a loaded handgun in the trunk of a car.

Officers Brian Keegan and Paul Rocchio of the Third Precinct Gang Unit were on patrol March 2 when they observed a speeding 2002 Mercedes Benz, police said.

The officers conducted a traffic stop and observed a stun gun in the vehicle as they interviewed the driver, Scott Shelby, 37, of 147 McNair St.

As police were arresting Shelby and his passenger LaPaul Phelps, 29, of 449 Grand Blvd., they heard an animal in the trunk of the car. When the officers opened the trunk, they observed an ill-looking female pit-bull. The officers removed the dog and observed a semi-auto pistol where the dog "Spici" was lying.

Both men were charged with criminal possession of a weapon third degree for the loaded gun. Scott was additionally charged with a second count of criminal possession of a weapon third degree for possession of the stun gun because of a prior conviction.

Phelps was charged with criminal possession of a weapon fourth degree for the stun gun.

The pit-bull was taken by the Islip Animal Shelter for treatment.
