Marie Covington Vrondos' pets were kept in the Utah County Animal Shelter while her criminal case which included cruelty to animal charges worked it's way through the court system. The seven cats and one dog were kept at the shelter more than 200 days. Vrondos' seven cats and one dog were six more than allowed by Provo ordinance. The animals are still in the shelter and will remain there until she pays for their care which is more than $14,000.
Vrondos must pay $14,000 before she can get her pets back. The animal shelter has a standard daily fee per animal of $9.18. The animal shelter billed the city of Provo, which passed the bill onto Vrondos.
Police took the cats out of Vrondos home, a recreational vehicle in mid-August because of the alleged stench and unsanitary conditions in the RV. They were kept in the shelter against Vrondos' will until Judge Derek Pullen of the 4th District Court dismissed the case on March 17.
The court order which released Vrondos also said she was responsible for the bill for the shelter keeping her animals. The court gave her five days to retrieve her animals.
She was unable to get them and the pets have since been removed. Animal control officers won't say where her animals are now.
Vrondos' attorney, Scott Card, said if Vrondos walks away and doesn't try to retrieve her animals, the bill should be dropped. Card wants to make certain his client is treated fairly. He doesn't handle civil cases which is what this has turned into. Card said, "She doesn't have a thing in this world. If Provo doesn't have to pay anything, why should she? You could house the homeless for less than that." References | Desert Morning News, Salt Lake City - April 8, 2004 |
