Jill Crosland left her large mastiff-cross and corgi-cross in her car for one week while she stayed at an Auckland backpackers hostel.

Crosland was pleased the SPCA had intervened. John Heremaia, SPCA inspector, rescued the two dogs from her car parked on Darby Street after complaints from the public.

Heremaia, said "It's not an ideal situation and the dogs are barking at passersby."

Crosland said,"I tried my hardest to please everyone ... this will make things easier because I've got nowhere to keep them."

Heremaia said the dogs had been left in the car since last Tuesday, and were barking all day with no water and a "couple of Tux biscuits."

"Everybody grabbed water bottles and we put water through the gap in the window so they could at least drink."

Jill Crosland is expected to collect the dogs from the shelter tomorrow for the drive back to Wellington.
