Police arrested a Norwich woman on animal cruelty charges after finding numerous sick cats and piles of feces in her home.
Dec. 7, police served a search warrant at the residence of Geraghty I. Hawkins, 41, at 6 Great Plain Road.
Senior Animal Control Officer Michele Kellough was joined by several police officers and members of the Uncas Health District, Human Services, Zoning and fire departments.
Police said the home was in total disarray, with various items filing every room within feet of the ceiling. Most of the home was inaccessible because of piles of clothing and trash covered with cat feces, urine and insects.
Hawkins and another occupant were assisted by social services and mobile outreach, police said.
Nine cats were removed from the home and at least six more eluded capture, Kellough wrote in an arrest warrant affidavit.
No food, water or litter boxes were evident, she wrote.
Hawkins was charged with nine counts of animal cruelty because of the lack of medical care, unsanitary conditions, unsafe environment, foul air and lack of food for the animals.
Treated for fleas and parasites, one cat was infected with feline AIDS, three with feline leukemia and three with upper respiratory infections, Kellough said.
Presented in Norwich Superior Court Jan 19, 2006, Hawkins was released on a promise to appear in court Feb. 3 and referred to the Southeastern Mental Health Authority. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
