Unable to contain his excitement, Peyton briefly stood on his injured hind leg to lovingly nibble the ear of his new foster owner. "Hes so good natured for what hes been through."

On Dec. 18, 2005, the fuzzy, peach-colored, bichon-poodle was far less animated and in a world of pain after a 10-year-old boy repeatedly swung the family dog by a leash and broke its hind leg behind the youths Alling Street home. But with the help of Animal Control Sgt. Ralph Angelo, the frisky pup will spend some time recuperating after Angelo persuaded the boys father to surrender ownership rather than face a court order forcing him to do so. "Our main thing at Animal Control is to keep this dog safe from further abuse," Angelo said.

Thus, Peyton wagging his tail despite a metal pin in his leg made his way into the arms of a volunteer from Branford-based Save Animals from Elimination Inc. SAFE Inc. rescues and relocates abused cats and dogs, and has agreed to help care for Peyton until Angelo finds an adoptive home after his injury heals. The nonprofit group also fronted the $1,500 medical bill the city incurred so Peyton could receive corrective surgery at the Orange Veterinary Hospital.

Though Peytons wavy fur is growing back in over his shaved leg and his canine spirits are up, Angelo said it could take weeks before he can be adopted, as the puppys left hind leg is still stiff from the trauma and will require physical therapy. Only afterward, Angelo said, Animal Control will consider potential adoptive owners applications, which are available at 7 Collis St.

Oblivious to all that, Peyton ignored veterinarians orders to keep off his injury by hobbling after a much bigger cat. "Eventually, hell be back to normal," the foster owner optimistically observed, scooping up the dog into his arms several times to prevent Peyton from accidentally re-breaking his fragile leg. Angelo said the 10-year-olds father was cooperative with police in transferring ownership, even expressing shock to Angelo about his sons alleged actions since the child had been the closest to the pup. "The family seemed to be really nice and the father a hardworking guy," Angelo said, noting that the family didnt appear to have any other pets.

"I hope they never get another one," said Tokarczyk, who cares for four other abused dogs and five cats.

To donate to Peytons medical bills, checks may be sent to SAFE Inc., Attn. Kay McCarthy, 422 W. Todd St., Hamden 06518.
